Frequently, when the conversation turns to religion and I reveal myself to be atheist, and, further than that, rather against the existance of religion and its pernicious effect on society, I find that the followers of the bearded cloud monster tell me that I shouldn't be anti-religion, live and let live. I find this all a bit rich as religions are happy to indoctrinate infants and people in a vulnerable condition, and there's little 'live and let live' in that - the word of God is the word of God (see, they've even got me, why am I capitalising god?)
The change seems to come when you start offering counter-arguments and show that you've thought about it a bit. If your god is omnipotent, surely he doesn't need you to still my cynical mouth to save his followers from being turned by my evil words? I'd hope that the big man could at least run me a close second in a debate.
All in all, if you're willing to put leaflets through my door telling me that Jesus is my saviour or tell my child in assembly that a virgin gave birth and there's some big brother figure watching their every move, it's time to defend your actions.

I rather like the idea of God
I rather like the idea of God going door to door....
Good idea. You should suggest
Good idea. You should suggest this to Him.
Shouldn't he also do his own
Shouldn't he also do his own leafletting. And maybe take an assembly every now and again?
Why on earth are you asking
Why on earth are you asking us mere humans these questions? Surely you should ask God? It is not up to us to prove God's existence to you, it is up to Him.
